Have you ever had Greek cucumber yogurt sauce? It's a condiment that's traditionally made with yogurt, cucumbers, dill, garlic, and salt for a cool and refreshing taste.

But yogurt is a controversial ingredient in the low-carb community. While sweetened yogurt is technically the frowned-upon ingredient in the keto community, I prefer to make my tzatziki sauce with full fat sour cream instead.

However, plain unsweetened yogurt would work just as well in this recipe. Just be careful and pay attention to make sure it is low in carbs and sugar.

Just like the traditional sauce, my version is perfect for dipping fresh vegetables into, or to be drizzled on top of a gyro. Tzatziki sauce (sometimes misspelled as taziki sauce) goes great with grilled meats like chicken, beef, pork, and lamb. It’s a perfect sauce to add cool and tangy flavor!

And this sauce is so easy to make. You can be ready to serve it in less than 10 minutes!

    ingredients used

How to make tzatziki with sour cream

The creamy low-carb sauce comes together in just a few simple steps:

    1. Without removing the skin, grate the cucumber using the small holes on your box grater.
    2. Squeeze as much moisture out of the grated cucumber as possible. You can use your hands or simply wrap the shredded cucumber in a paper towel.
    3. Mix the sour cream, grated cucumber, fresh dill, garlic powder, and fresh lemon juice together in a small bowl. Stir well to combine ingredients.
    4. Chill at least 2 hours, but if you are in a rush, you can use it immediately.
    prepping the sauce

Enjoy immediately or cover and store in the refrigerator. The sauce will be even better after it’s had time to chill.

    How to prepare the cucumber

Did you know that cucumbers are 95% water? That’s why it’s so refreshing to eat them raw.

But you don’t want all that liquid going into a keto tzatziki sauce because it will become too runny. The key to this recipe is to remove as much of the moisture from the grated cucumber as possible.

To do this, I recommend taking a handful of grated cucumber at a time and squeezing it between your palms over the sink. Set it on a paper towel until you’re ready to use.

Alternatively, you could add the grated cucumber to a fine mesh sieve and press with paper towels to squeeze out the liquid.

Finally, you could salt the cucumbers to draw out the water. Add the grated cucumber to a sieve over a bowl, toss with salt, then allow it to sit for about 15 minutes.

Once the time is up, press with paper towels or the back of a spatula to release even more water.

If you use the salting method, you may want to reduce the amount of salt you add to the recipe.

    Serving Suggestions

I like using sour cream in this recipe to keep the tzatziki sauce low in carbs. That means it’s great to pair with other keto foods.

An easy option is to serve it as a dipping sauce for freshly chopped low-carb vegetables. Keto friendly dippers like my parmesan crisp recipe would be great with it as well.

It’s also fantastic with anything you cook on the grill! The smoky flavor of the meat combined with the cool tang of this sauce is so delicious. Looking for a fun option for dinner? Make some keto friendly gyros! Just grill up your protein of choice, add it to a coconut flour tortillas, then top it off with some feta and tzatziki!
