Juicy Air Fryer Steak

One of the best ways to enjoy meat on a low-carb diet is to prepare a juicy steak for dinner. There are so many ways to make it - whether you grill the steak, bake it, fry it on the stove, or make it in the air fryer.

I finally perfected my air fryer steak!

When you follow this recipe, the steaks come out juicy with the perfect amount of spices that don't overpower the amazing taste of the meat.

How To Make Steaks In The Air Fryer

There are three parts to making a steak in the air fryer:

  1. Prepping the steak
  2. Cooking it
  3. Letting it rest

Some people like to marinate their steaks but I decided to use a dry rub instead. I prefer to let the taste of the steaks stand out instead of trying to cover it up with sauce.

The air fryer only takes about 12 minutes to cook a steak completely. You don't have to turn the steaks over halfway through cooking. Some people want to, but I didn't and it didn't burn the steaks or make one side cook faster than the other.

After you cook the steaks, let them rest for about 10 minutes. This will help the steaks finish cooking completely before you slice into them.

Trust me, don't skip the rest period. This is a very important step if you want to have a juicy piece of meat for dinner.

Best Seasoning For Steaks

I fell in love with this steak rub.

When you use it, use your hands to really rub it into the steak. This will help the herbs and spices penetrate the meat and give each bite lots of flavor.

I personally tend to think that simple is always best. I used a pre-made steak seasoning with some salt and pepper.

That's it!

Homemade Steak Rub

If you want to make your own steak rub, the most popular herbs that work with steak include:

  • Garlic
  • Onion
  • Parsley
  • Basil
  • Paprika

Frequently Asked Questions About Air Fryer Steaks

The entire recipe is at the bottom of this post. First, here are some answers to some frequently asked questions about cooking steak in the air fryer.

At What Temperature Is Steak Fully Cooked?

Steak is fully cooked when the internal temperature reaches 135°F. I suggest using a meat thermometer to make sure it reaches this temperature before eating it. The perfect steak will be at least 145°F, which will be medium rare.

DonenessInternal TempCenter Color
Rare120-135°FRed
Medium Rare130-135°FPink
Medium135-145°FSome Pink
Well145-155°FHardly Pink
Well Done155°F or moreAll Brown or Gray

Is An Air Fryer Keto-Friendly?

Yes, the appliance itself is a very keto-friendly tool. Just like a stove, it all depends on what you put inside of it.

I love my air fryer! It's actually better to use than frying something on the stove. It makes a lot less of a mess.

It basically blows hot hair on food sitting inside the air fryer basket, so it doesn't require extra oil or grease. However, with foods that are naturally low in fat, I usually give a quick spritz of olive oil.

This is a very easy way to cook steak, pork chops, chicken wings, and even fried pickles.

Can You Marinate Steaks Before You Air Fry Them?

Yes, you can air fry marinated steaks. In fact, this will make them have even more flavor.

If you are going to marinate your steaks while on the keto diet, use a sugar-free marinade.

Most people recommend marinating steak overnight to let the sauce really soak into the meat the best.

If you don't marinate your steak beforehand, at least give it a good helping of salt and pepper on both sides. If I don't marinate, I like to finish the air fryer steak with a tab of garlic herb butter. You can find the recipe for my garlic butter in my beef tenderloin recipe.

What Do You Serve With Steak?

Steak is a very popular main course that works on almost any diet or eating plan. It's paleo and low-carb. It is also Whole30 compliant.

If you are on the keto diet, you should serve this steak with something that is low-carb and full of fiber. This steak pairs well with a simple keto spinach salad.

This will also taste amazing with a low-carb side dish, too. Sauteed green beans and mushrooms are the perfect thing to serve with this steak!

If you want something that reminds you of "meat and potatoes," then serve this with some mashed cauliflower.

How Long Does Cooked Steak Stay Good?

You can reuse air fried steak in salad recipes later on during the week, but eat it quick. Steak only lasts about 4 days in the refrigerator.

What Is The Best Type Of Steak To Cook In The Air Fryer?

For this recipe, I used New York Strip steaks. They are the perfect thickness to cook quickly in the air fryer without drying out.

The other types of steak that work really well in the air fryer are:

  • T-Bone Steak
  • Sirloin Steak
  • Rib Eye Steak

Filet Mignon tastes amazing, but it is so thick that it usually comes out rare, which not everyone is a fan of.

If you want a really tender steak, don't get a skirt steak. It has a ton of flavor, but it comes out tougher and chewier than strip steak.

Is It Safe To Eat Rare Steak?

Lots of people swear by eating pink meat, claiming it is extra juicy and tender - but how safe is that?

When it comes to food safety, the internal temperature is more important than the color of the steak. When you cook a steak to the proper temperature, it kills the bacteria that could make you sick.

This is why I always suggest going by the temperature of the steak when you cook it.

Ingredients

  • 2 New York Strip Steaks 6-8 ounces
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • steak seasonings of your choosing
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • parsley optional garnish

Instructions

  • Preheat your air fryer to 400°F if your air fryer requires preheating.
  • Bring steaks to room temperature for more even cooking.
  • Season both sides of the steaks with salt, pepper and any additional keto-friendly seasonings you might like.
  • Place the steaks in a single layer on a rack in the air fryer closer to the bottom than to the top.
  • Cook 10 minutes for rare, 12 minutes for medium-rare and 14 minutes for well done. It is best to turn the steaks halfway through the cooking time for more even cooking as well, but this is not necessary.
  • Allow the steaks to sit and rest before slicing for 5-10 minutes.
  • Place a pat of butter and freshly chopped parsley on the top of each steak before serving.

Notes

Other steaks that cook well in an air fryer are T-Bone Steak, Sirloin Steak, and Rib Eye Steak.
Meat can be marinated overnight instead of using a dry-rub, if desired. Just be sure to use a keto-friendly marinade.
Steak is fully cooked when the internal temperature reaches 135°F. I suggest using a meat thermometer to make sure it reaches this temperature before eating it.

Ok Lisa~ so now I'm super curious which pre-packaged steak seasoning you "fell in love with"? I typically do make my own each time, but it sure would be great to find one to use when I'm short on time or just don't feel like getting all the seasonings out.
*Also, do you put a tray under your air fryer rack that the steaks are on? I'm still new to using mine, & worry about getting grease & drippings all over the elements, as mine is a large, square air fryer that looks like a toaster oven with 4 different positions for the rack/mesh trays that came with it- plus a little, solid broiler type pan that I've been using to catch the mess. Just curious if I'm missing something w/using this thing! =) Thanks, in advance~ Samantha in AZ

I really like this keto seasoning blend because it has no added sugar and it's grain free. As for the air fryer setup, I have the roasting pan under the rack so it can collect any drippings when I cook the steak. My air fryer is also the toaster oven style.

It depends on the what kind of air fryer you have. I never line mine with parchment paper.

You can use any dry rub you like. I used a Montreal steak seasoning blend.
